Perth Free Walking Tour
Description
Elizabeth Quay, the Bell Tower... On this free walking tour of Perth, you'll uncover the history and significant landmarks of the capital of Western Australia. This experience is essential for anyone visiting the city!
Tour Details
At the scheduled time, we will gather at Elizabeth Quay, a dynamic waterfront area that has reshaped Perth’s connection with the Swan River. From this vibrant location, we will embark on a free walking tour exploring the heart of Western Australia's capital.
Our first destination will be The Swan Bell Tower, which rises to 270 ft (82.5 m) and features a contemporary design. This tower holds 12 bells originally from the St Martin-in-the-Fields church in London. Notably, some of these bells date back to the 14th century.
Next, we will proceed to Stirling Gardens, the oldest public garden in the city, where we will delve into the early colonial urban planning of Perth. Close by, we will find the elegant State Buildings, a late Neoclassical complex that served as the administrative center for the government for more than a century.
Continuing our journey, we will marvel at the stunning St George's Cathedral, an exemplary model of Victorian Gothic architecture made with local sandstone. Here, we will discuss how its design draws inspiration from the vaulted ceilings of Europe's grand medieval cathedrals.
We will then visit Perth Town Hall, the only example of Flamboyant Gothic architecture in Australia, constructed by convict labor. Following that, a stroll along Hay Street Mall will reveal a shopping thoroughfare that illustrates the city’s development since the late 19th century.
A few steps further, we will arrive at London Court, a Tudor-style arcade reminiscent of traditional shopping galleries in London. The entrance features an iconic clock showcasing an animated scene of Saint George battling the dragon.
When we reach Forrest Place, we will explore the diverse architectural styles that surround this public space, including Federation Free Classical, Art Deco, and Interwar Functionalist designs.
To conclude our 2-hour free walking tour of Perth, we will visit the contemporary Yagan Square.
