Tenerife Winery & Vineyard Discovery

For wine aficionados, this experience offers an immersive exploration of southern Tenerife's vineyards, where age-old traditions of winemaking are brought to life. Savor the rich and diverse profiles of Canarian wines, making this guided tour an essential experience for any wine lover.

Tour Overview

We will begin our adventure with a convenient pickup from a designated meeting point in southern Tenerife, starting with a visit to the Las Margaritas banana plantation. Here, participants will gain insights into the cultivation of this celebrated local fruit.

As we wander through the plantation, you will discover the historic methods of banana harvesting and its culinary applications, including traditional recipes featuring gofio and molasses. Following the tour, a tasting of these unique products will be on offer.

Next, depending on seasonal availability, we shall proceed to one of two wineries in the area: Cumbres de Abona or Mencey de Chasna. Here, you will learn about the intricacies of local winemaking, followed by a Canarian wine tasting that will reveal the subtle flavors and aromas of the region’s offerings.

The exploration continues as we make our way to the picturesque village of Vilaflor, home to Bodegas Reverón. The winery's knowledgeable staff will guide you through their production process, leading to another tasting session and a traditional Canarian lunch featuring specialties like almogrote, a distinctive cheese and pepper spread native to the islands.

After lunch, we will return to our original meeting point, concluding this enriching 4.5-hour adventure.

The Wine Heritage of the Canary Islands

The introduction of European grape varieties to the Canary Islands in the 14th century, facilitated by missionaries prior to Spanish colonization, marked the beginning of a flourishing winemaking tradition. By the mid-16th century, this craft evolved into a significant industry, especially due to the export of cherished Malvasia wine to Europe and America, driven by British traders. Despite facing disruptions from conflicts and volcanic events, the wine trade prospered for over three centuries.

The landscape shifted dramatically in the 1860s with the arrival of the phylloxera pest, decimating European vineyards. Remarkably, the Canary Islands remained unscathed, preserving some of the world's oldest grape varieties.

Today, Tenerife stands out for its ability to produce high-quality wines thanks to its unique volcanic soil and various microclimates. The absence of grafting, coupled with the diverse topography from coastal areas to high-altitude vineyards, contributes to the distinctive character of the wines, ranging from crisp whites to robust reds.

Pickup Information

Participants can expect a pickup time between 7:55 am and 8:40 am from specified locations in southern Tenerife: Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje, Costa del Silencio, and Ten Bel. You will select your preferred pickup point during the reservation process.
