Castel Sant'Angelo Tour + Terrace Access
Description
The Castel Sant'Angelo, also known as the Mausoleum of Hadrian, was built between 134 and 139 AD and is an important landmark in Rome. An English-speaking guide will provide insights into its history.
Castel Sant'Angelo: An Icon of the Imperial Era
Originally constructed as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian and his family, Castel Sant'Angelo has transformed throughout history, serving as a military fortress in the Middle Ages and a papal castle during the Renaissance. Its notable features include thick stone walls, defensive towers, and a moat.
The Ponte Sant’Angelo, a bridge adorned with angelic statues, connects the castle to central Rome.
Tour Details
Participants will meet their guide at the entrance of Castel Sant'Angelo to begin the guided tour, starting with the sculptures on Ponte Sant’Angelo spanning the Tiber River. Following this, the group will enter the castle to explore its history, including the legend of St. Michael's appearance during a plague in the 6th century AD.
Papal Legends
The tour includes visits to the upper floors, showcasing rooms dedicated to the popes with Renaissance frescoes, some attributed to the school of Raphael.
The Vatican's Secret Tunnel
Visitors will learn about the secret tunnel to the Vatican, an underground corridor that allowed Pope Clement VII to escape during the 1527 attack by Charles V. This setting has inspired various authors, including Dan Brown in “Angels and Demons”.
The Terrace at Castel Sant'Angelo
A highlight will be the ascent to the terrace for panoramic views of Rome and Vatican City, ideal for photographs. The tour will conclude in front of the castle after approximately 2 to 3 hours.
