Sarajevo Walking Tour
Description
This guided walking tour in Sarajevo offers an exceptional opportunity to delve into the political, financial, social, and cultural heartbeat of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Stroll through its historic pathways and uncover the architectural gems that mark its landscape!
Sarajevo Walking Tour
Our adventure begins at Zelenih Beretki 30 at the designated time, from where we will embark on a guided exploration of the old town, which stands as a testament to the long-standing history of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s capital, renowned for its significance during the Balkan War in the 1990s.
During this insightful exploration of Sarajevo, you will be introduced to the city’s rich past, once a formidable Ottoman stronghold in the 15th century. Key historical events, including its pivotal involvement in the First World War—where Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated—will also be highlighted.
Our journey will take us to Mejdan Park, a lush oasis by the Miljacka River. Here, we will appreciate the remarkable architecture of significant buildings such as the Emperor's Mosque designed by Gazi Husrev Bey, alongside a variety of sacred sites—including synagogues, mosques, and both Catholic and Orthodox churches, exemplified by the Franciscan Church of St. Anthony, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Serbian Orthodox Church, and the ancient Jewish Temple. The harmonized calls to prayer from these diverse religious sites vividly illustrates why Sarajevo is often referred to as the “Jerusalem of Europe”!
We will then catch a glimpse of the oldest brewery from the Ottoman Empire, an inn from that period, and meander through streets celebrated for their traditional culinary delights, notably Bravadžiluk and Kazandžiluk.
Continuing on, we will pass notable residences like the Bicakcic-Hadzisabanovic and Spite, showcasing the city's architectural heritage. As we stroll down Kova?i Street, the cemetery honoring the Bosnian defenders from the conflict that concluded in 1995 will also be visited.
We will further explore Baš?aršija, the vibrant old bazaar and the cultural heart of the city, originally established during Ottoman times. This locale is perfect for browsing the various stalls to find a unique souvenir. Our pathway through Bravadžiluk and Kazandžiluk streets leads us to culinary hotspots, culminating in a visit to the bustling Markale market, rich in local flavors and traditions.
After visiting other significant landmarks like the Sebilj Fountain and the Eternal Flame, we will conclude our tour approximately two hours after we began, back at the meeting point.
