Description
Embark on a captivating exploration of Shkodra, where we will uncover the Mesi Bridge, the historic ruins of Drisht, and the impressive Rozafa Castle. This journey will reveal the rich tapestry of its Illyrian and Ottoman heritage. Are you ready to delve into history?
Tour Overview
Your adventure begins with a pickup from your accommodation in Shkodra. Once all participants are gathered, we’ll set off to explore one of Albania's oldest cities. Established by the Illyrians around the 4th century BC and later influenced by Ottoman culture, Shkodra is a vibrant fusion of traditions and stories.
As we meander through charming alleys full of cafés, boutiques, and plazas, we will make our way to the Kir River, home to the Mesi Bridge. This ancient stone marvel, constructed during the Ottoman era, boasts 13 arches and holds the title of the longest and best-preserved Ottoman bridge in Albania.
Upon crossing this historic structure, we’ll continue to Drisht, where the remnants of a medieval settlement dating back to the 10th century AD await us. Once known as Drivastum by the Romans, this area thrived as a commercial and religious hub during the Byzantine and Venetian eras. We’ll observe the remaining church ruins and defensive towers, remnants of its glorious past.
Next, we’ll proceed towards Rozafa Castle, perched atop a hill with stunning views of the lake and the Bojana and Drin rivers. During our visit, we’ll explore its intriguing history, which traces back to the 4th century BC when the Illyrians established their first fortifications at this vital location in Shkodra.
As time progressed, both Romans and Venetians enhanced its structure, transforming it into a key military fortress for the region. We’ll marvel at its Venetian towers, Ottoman courtyards, warehouses, and storage facilities, all steeped in a tragic legend that we’ll be excited to share with you!
Concluding our engaging tour, we’ll return to your hotel and bid farewell after experiencing a rich 3 hours of Shkodra's historical treasures.
