Angkor Wat Temples Tour Itinerary
After meeting up at The Blanc Residence, you'll head north of the city to begin your tour of the mystical ruins of the ancient city of Angkor, the former Khmer capital between the 9th century and the fall of the empire in the 15th century.
Begin your guided tour discovering Angkor Wat, the most famous of Cambodia's temples. Located in the former capital of the Khmer Empire, the temple complex was built in the early 12th century. Despite the almost complete abandonment of Angkor, this holy site has incredibly remained a place of worship since its foundation. Learn all about the history of the temple, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992, as you stroll through peaceful avenues in which Buddhist monks can still be seen praying.
Continue your route of Angkor to Bayon, a temple famous for the bas-reliefs of smiling faces that adorn its walls. You'll then reach Ta Promh, a Buddhist monastery that has been reclaimed by nature since being abandoned. Marvel at the crumbling stone walls and doorways covered by creeping jungle roots and branches - you might recognise the mythical scene as a filming location in Tomb Raider.
Stop for a break from your Angkor adventure in a local restaurant, where you'll enjoy a delicious lunch to renew your energy before heading on to the next part of your tour: exploring Angkor Thom.
Angkor Thom is one of the ancient Khmer capital's biggest complexes - the name itself means 'Great City' - and it was the last hold of the empire before the country was conquered by Thailand in the 15th century. Cross the former walled city's fully-restored Southern Gate and wander amongst its magnificent ruins, discovering yet more of the incredible religious sanctuaries here, including the almost 1000-year-old temple mountain Baphuon.
On your guided tour, you'll also visit the Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King. Learn how the latter statue got this name before you move on to explore the Phimeankas, a three-tier pyramid temple inside the walled Royal Palace enclosure.
Finally, you'll return to the original meeting point in Siem Reap around 5:30 pm.
