National Palace of Sintra & Gardens
With this ticket, you gain access to the refined halls and chambers of the National Palace of Sintra. This majestic former royal abode has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995.
The palace's roots can be traced back to the 10th century, when it was noted by the Arab geographer Al-Bakri as a dwelling for Arab governors. In the 13th century, it was recorded that Denis I of Portugal utilized this palace, which initially comprised only a few rooms and a chapel. Legend has it that he bestowed the palace upon his spouse, Queen Saint Elizabeth of Portugal, marking the beginning of its role as the residence of Portuguese royalty.
The devastating Lisbon earthquake of 1755 wrecked numerous sections of the original structure, which were subsequently reconstructed to reflect its 16th-century design. Within, visitors can admire the Spanish-Mudejar style rooms adorned with tiles, the Hall of the Coats of Arms, the Hall of the Arabs, the Hall of the Swans, and the royal kitchens.
The gardens have been revitalized by the public entity Parques de Sintra. Since 2013, this entire site has joined the ranks of the European Network of Royal Residences.
The National Palace, with its distinctive cone-shaped towers, forms a critical part of the Sintra landscape and the narrative of Portuguese royalty. Wandering through its passages will evoke the grandeur of a time when authority permeated every room and winding corridor.
