Veliko Tarnovo & Arbanasi Day Trip

Veliko Tarnovo is one of the most important medieval cities in Bulgaria. Discover its beautiful architecture for yourself when you take this trip from Sofia. The tour also includes a visit to the historical village of Arbanasi.

Day Trip Details

The tour begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Sofia as we head towards Veliko Tarnovo. After approximately three hours of travel, our first stop will be the small medieval village of Arbanasi, renowned for its numerous historical churches and religious monuments.

During our visit, we will explore the Church of the Nativity of Christ, known for its exquisite interior frescoes, showcasing the architectural style typical of late Middle Ages religious buildings in Bulgaria.

After spending around an hour and a half in Arbanasi, we will continue our journey to Veliko Tarnovo, revered as the medieval capital of Bulgaria. Upon arrival, we will pause at a traditional restaurant where you can enjoy some local cuisine (meal cost not included).

With your appetite satisfied, we will embark on a two-hour guided tour of the city, visiting key landmarks and historical sites. Veliko Tarnovo, often referred to as Bulgaria's 'City of Medieval Tsars', is home to a 12th-century fortress located on Tsarevets hill, which features the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Holy Ascension of God.

During the tour, we will see Baldwin's Tower, one of the turreted defenses of the fortress, as well as the significant Execution Rock, along with historic houses and government buildings.

We will return to Sofia by around 6 PM.
