Ortigia Island Guided Tour
Description
During this guided tour of Ortigia Island, participants will navigate the intricate network of lanes and thoroughfares in the historic heart of Syracuse. The experience includes the exploration of significant historical sites, along with stunning temples, palaces, churches, and fountains.
Description
At the scheduled time, we will convene at Largo XXV Luglio, positioned directly in front of the Temple of Apollo. This landmark edifice dates back to the early 6th century B.C. and is widely recognized as the oldest Doric temple in Sicily. It serves as one of the earliest architectural instances in Western Europe of the transition from timber structures to stone construction.
After delving into the captivating history of this temple, we will proceed to the Church of San Filippo Apostolo, where we will visit its crypt, which functioned as an air-raid shelter during World War II.
Next, we will find ourselves at Piazza Archimede, where we can admire the Fountain of Diana, crafted in 1906 by the sculptor Giulio Moschetti. This notable fountain depicts the legend of the nymph Arethusa, who escapes Alphaeus with the assistance of Diana.
The tour will continue to the impressive Cathedral of Syracuse, a remarkable structure established in the 17th century that combines Baroque elements with the original Doric temple dedicated to the Roman goddess Minerva, which was central to ancient Syracusan society.
We will also encounter the charming Arethusa Fountain, a circular body of water adorned with lush papyrus plants. Much like the Fountain of Diana, this site is steeped in the same myth involving Arethusa and Alphaeus, a topic we will explore further during our visit.
Following two hours of uncovering the history of Syracuse's ancient island, we will conclude our guided tour of Ortigia and bid farewell to one another.
