Tarragona Free Walking Tour
Description
Unveil the Roman heritage during this complimentary tour of Tarragona, once known as the province of Hispania Tarraconensis. Engage deeply with the rich history of this remarkable city!
Details of the Free Tour
We will convene at the Creu de Terme de Sant Antoni at the scheduled time, ready to embark on a walking tour through Tarragona. Are you prepared to delve into the fascinating past of this Catalonian port city? Let’s start our adventure!
The exploration begins as we admire the historic structures of the Wall of Tarragona, a significant Roman fortification that once enclosed the ancient city of Tarraco. It was one of the leading cities in the Iberian Peninsula during the Roman era.
Next, our journey leads us to the Tarragona Cathedral, a site rich in Roman history. Erected on the foundations of Roman, Visigoth, and Arab origins, it gained recognition as a national monument in 1905.
As we make our way towards the Jewish Quarter, we’ll stop at the oldest shop in Catalonia. Walking through the charming cobbled streets, we will uncover the town’s narrative, which showcases its various transformations throughout history.
Our next destination includes the Roman circus and amphitheater, both recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Can you envision the exhilarating chariot races and gladiatorial contests that captivated audiences over 2,000 years ago?
As we continue, we will pass by the Town Hall building and witness the castellers training in the art of constructing human towers, a time-honored tradition.
Our tour concludes at the Balcony of the Mediterranean, standing at 40 meters (131 ft) high, offering breathtaking views of the Mare Nostrum. Remember to touch the railing—it's said to bring good fortune!
After 2.5 hours of exploration, we will conclude our complimentary tour at this scenic viewpoint.
