Óbidos Walking Tour

Our adventure begins at the appointed hour in front of the Óbidos Tourism Office. Once all attendees are gathered, we will embark on an engaging journey through some of the most captivating spots in Óbidos. Let’s set off!

The first highlight of our tour will be the Óbidos Town Gate, the primary entry point into the town. From there, we will stroll to the Óbidos Castle, a remarkable example of medieval military design. As we continue, the captivating atmosphere of the town envelops us, featuring its flowery houses, historic churches, and lively squares filled with locals.

Our route will also take us inside the Mercado Biológico Bookstore, a quirky venue that offers a selection of books alongside fresh local produce.

After a peaceful moment in the bookstore, we will proceed to Santa Maria Church, the town’s principal church. Originally built during the Visigothic era, it was repurposed as a mosque before returning to a Christian church in 1148. The structure we see today primarily reflects renovations from the 16th century.

Next, our journey carries us through the Jewish Quarter, leading us to the Saõ Tiago Church Bookstore. This splendid 12th-century church, known as 'Livraria de Santiago', now houses books that encircle the altar! After exploring this intriguing site, we will reach a scenic viewpoint, allowing us to take in stunning vistas of the village and the surrounding landscape.

To conclude this remarkable excursion, we will indulge in a tasting of the traditional Portuguese liquor, Ginjinha. This drink, created by infusing berries in alcohol with various components, boasts a history that dates back centuries. We’ll savor this delightful beverage at a local bar, served in a unique chocolate cup.
