Descrizione
Acquiring tickets for the Great Budapest Synagogue allows you to explore the largest Jewish place of worship in Europe. An audio guide in English is included, helping you delve into the rich cultural history of the Hungarian capital.
Great Budapest Synagogue
Commonly referred to as the Great Synagogue on Dohány Street, this remarkable structure is not only the biggest synagogue in Europe but also ranks as the second largest globally. It was officially opened in 1859, marking the height of the Jewish community's presence in Hungary.
Designed in a stunning Moorish-Byzantine architecture by the Viennese architect Ludwig Förster, its striking exterior features rounded domes and distinctive red and yellow brick patterns. Inside, visitors can admire an elaborately decorated space that accommodates nearly 3000 individuals.
With your entry to the Budapest Synagogue, you have the flexibility to explore this significant cultural landmark at your own leisure. The synagogue is situated in the heart of what is now the Jewish Quarter, which was transformed into the Budapest Ghetto during World War II and the Holocaust.
The synagogue complex consists of the Heroes’ Temple, a cemetery, and the Tree of Life Memorial, serving as a poignant tribute to those who lost their lives. It is unique as the only Jewish burial ground located within the premises of a synagogue, with many victims of the ghetto laid to rest here.
Visiting the Dohány Synagogue offers not only an opportunity to admire its stunning architecture but also invites you on a meaningful journey through the annals of Budapest’s Jewish history, reflecting on its challenges and remarkable tenacity.
Audio Guide for Budapest Exploration
In addition to your entry, the ticket provides an English audio guide that enhances your experience as you traverse Budapest and discover its most notable sites. Following the audio’s direction, you will visit St. Stephen’s Basilica, the Hungarian State Opera House, the House of Terror, Heroes' Square, and the impressive Hungarian Parliament Building.
The journey culminates at the Széchenyi Chain Bridge, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Danube River and the surrounding cityscape.
