Embark on a remarkable day trip to Cholila from Esquel, where nature's grandeur meets Indigenous culture, rich cowboy folklore, and delightful regional cuisine. This journey promises an unforgettable experience!

Trip Overview

We will meet you at your accommodation in Esquel at the scheduled time. Shortly after our departure, journeying along the scenic route, you'll witness how the lush Andean forests transition into the expansive Patagonian Steppe or desert, marking your passage through a striking natural threshold!

During the drive, gaze upon the impressive Cordón de la Hoya, with its snow-capped peaks visible even in the summer months. As we proceed, we will pass the remnants of the famous La Trochita train, a historic route that evokes the spirit of early settlers and wanderers.

After approximately 90 km (55 mi) on the Ruta Nacional 40 highway, we will arrive at the Museo Leleque, nestled in the desert. You will have 1.5 hours to explore its exhibits at your leisure, uncovering the rich heritage of the Tehuelche people as well as the interactions between the Mapuche and early European settlers. Don’t miss the chance to pop into "El Boliche," a traditional bar where you can grab a drink.

If the weather cooperates, we’ll pause outdoors at a picturesque spot for a delightful picnic-style lunch, featuring pizza, skewers, cured meats, and dessert alongside wine, juice, and water. In case of unfavorable weather, we’ll enjoy our meal in the museum area.

Post-lunch, we’ll delve deeper into the tranquil Cholila Valley, an area of stunning landscapes framed by mountains and lakes. Next, we’ll visit the renowned cabin of Butsch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, two legendary North American outlaws who allegedly sought refuge here in the early 20th century. You’ll find yourself walking their paths, among orchards and groves that echo with tales of the past.

Afterward, we'll head to the iconic museum and bar La Legal. In this charming space filled with relics, we'll take a break to savor a snack accompanied by tea or coffee, complemented by both savory and sweet treats. Every corner here tells a story about Cholila's history.

As our adventure concludes, we will journey back to Esquel, ensuring you are returned to your hotel after a fulfilling 10-hour excursion.
