Itinerary Overview

Eager to witness one of Chubut's most remarkable rock formations? After a timely pickup from your hotel in Esquel, our adventure begins as we head northeast. Let’s get started!

As we depart from the highway and navigate towards the Chubut River valley, the scenery transforms dramatically. Amidst the arid land, lush trees like willows and poplars rise, indicating the presence of water.

Arriving at the Piedra Parada Nature Reserve, you'll be greeted by the striking sight of its towering rock formation, which rises to 787 ft (240 m), a remnant of volcanic activity. Its magnificent vertical walls, shaped by the elements over time, attract climbers globally. However, the essence of this site can be appreciated simply by gazing at its formidable silhouette amidst the expansive dry landscape.

Next, we will journey to Buitrera Canyon (Cañadón de la Buitrera), a slender chasm that evokes an extraterrestrial feel. As we traverse around 5.6 mi (8 km) through sedimentary rock formations, the only sounds will be our footsteps, occasionally accompanied by the faint rustle of a Patagonian chinchilla darting along the cliffs.

Following our hike, a delightful picnic-style meal will await us, featuring pizza, skewers, a selection of cured meats, and pastries, paired with wine, juice, and water.

Before our return trip, we will pass through Gualjaina, a quaint town with a population under 1,000, where life moves at a leisurely pace. Here, amid its quiet streets and modest homes, you can savor the tranquility of Patagonia with a light treat of tea or coffee along with a savory or sweet snack.

As we head back to Esquel, we'll witness the sun setting over the majestic Andes mountains, providing a picturesque farewell to this enchanting region. You'll be returned to your hotel approximately ten hours after our initial departure.
