Guimarães Free Walking Tour

At your chosen time, your journey begins at number 6, Padrão do Salado. Here, we'll embark on our complimentary walking tour through the picturesque city of Guimarães. Accompanied by an English-speaking guide, you will delve into the fascinating history of a city recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2001 and the birthplace of Alfonso I, the first monarch of Portugal.

As we stroll through the city center, you will pass the Church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira. Admire the stunning exteriors of various historic temples, such as the Basilica of São Pedro, the Church of São Francisco, and the Church of São Miguel, all over 600 years old. Nearby, the impressive Castle of Guimarães from the 10th century and the majestic Palace of the Dukes of Braganza await your discovery.

Our guide will lead us through several of the city’s main thoroughfares, including Largo de Santiago, Largo da Misericórdia, Largo de São Damasco, and the well-known Largo da Oliveira. At Largo da Oliveira, we'll encounter the Padrão do Salado, a notable monument that commemorates a historic battle between Moors and Christians. We will then proceed to the lively Largo do Toural, often regarded as the heart of Guimarães.

Throughout the tour, you’ll explore the medieval city walls, where a sign proclaims 'Portugal was born here'—an ideal spot for capturing a memorable photo!

Next, the group will visit the Martins Sarmento Museum (Sociedade Martins Sarmento), established in 1881, and the historical area of Couros, where you’ll gain insights into its significance for the city.

After two enriching hours exploring Guimarães, we will bid farewell to our guide close to the Church of Nossa Senhora da Consolação e Santos Passos.
