Highlights of Castel Nuovo
Your admission, paired with an audio guide in English, grants entry to various notable areas in Naples' Castel Nuovo:
Hall of the Barons
Known as the Sala dei Baroni, this remarkable hall is one of the castle's most breathtaking spaces. The name derives from the conspiracy of 1487, when King Ferdinand I of Naples lured rebellious barons to a feast, intending to arrest them. A striking feature of this hall is the magnificent Gothic vault in the shape of an octagonal star, crafted by the architect Guillem Sagrera from Mallorca.
Palatine Chapel
The Cappella Palatina is the sole remaining section of the original Angevin construction from the 14th century. While many frescoes have weathered the years, some fragments of Giotto’s works are still visible. This chapel also contains significant sculptures from the Neapolitan Renaissance, including Francesco Laurana’s Madonna and Child.
Civic Museum
Occupying multiple levels within the castle's west wing, the Civic Museum presents a chronological exploration of the city’s artistic heritage:
- 1st Floor: showcases religious art spanning from the 15th to the 18th centuries, featuring masterpieces by esteemed artists like Luca Giordano and Mattia Preti.
- 2nd and 3rd Floors: highlight Neapolitan paintings and sculptures from the 19th and 20th centuries.
- The basement hosts the armory, exhibiting weaponry from diverse eras. Beneath a large glass floor, visitors can also observe archaeological remnants of a Roman villa alongside a necropolis.
