Oviedo Free Walking Tour
Descrizione
Immerse yourself in the essence of Asturias' capital through an engaging walking tour of Oviedo. As you wander its ancient streets, you’ll uncover captivating stories from the past.
Tour Overview
Our journey begins at the designated time at the Monument to Alfonso II de Asturias, located on Calle del Águila, right at the city's heart. This is where we will set off on our leisurely walking tour of Oviedo.
We will first traverse the quaint medieval paths, exploring both the historical and modern aspects of the city while encountering some notable figures from its past. One of our first stops will be the Cathedral of San Salvador, a pivotal site for pilgrims on the renowned Camino de Santiago. This impressive structure showcases flamboyant Gothic architecture, harmoniously integrating pre-Romanesque and Baroque influences.
Next, we'll make our way to the Plaza de Trascorrales, a picturesque square nestled within the historic district. The square is highlighted by the Mercado El Fontán, a graceful structure built in the 19th century that now serves as a hub for cultural activities. Just a short stroll away, we will visit the Town Hall and the Plaza del Fontán, adorned with charming houses featuring arcades and vibrant wooden balconies. Here, we will delve into the significance of Oviedo as a vibrant market town.
Continuing our exploration, we will arrive at the University of Oviedo, boasting a rich heritage that spans over 400 years! This historic institution showcases classic 16th-century architecture along with a stunning cloister.
To conclude our tour, we will visit the Plaza de la Escandalera, which serves as a transition point between the city’s historic core and its modern sections. This square, intriguingly referred to as the square with 100 names, leads us to the Teatro Campoamor, recognized for its exquisite Neoclassical design, and the Iglesia de San Juan el Real, famed for both its spiritual resonance and architectural beauty.
Our walking tour will last approximately 2 to 2.5 hours, culminating back at our starting location.
